Six Things That Make Starting AIP A Little Easier
So You’re Starting AIP. Now What?
First things first: you do not need to figure everything out today.
Starting the Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) can come with a lot of information at once. Foods to remove. Ingredients to watch for. New things to cook. Labels to read. And, inevitably, the question:
Wait... so what can I eat?
That’s where we’d start.
AIP is designed as a temporary elimination and reintroduction protocol to help you better understand how different foods may affect you. While everyone’s experience looks a little different, having a pantry full of foods you actually enjoy can make the process feel a whole lot more manageable.
Here are a few places to begin.
1. Get familiar with what AIP means
The elimination phase of AIP generally focuses on nutrient-dense whole foods while temporarily removing certain foods, including grains, dairy, eggs, legumes, nightshades, nuts, seeds, alcohol and many processed ingredients.
The important word here is temporarily.
AIP isn't intended to be a forever elimination diet. Reintroduction is an important part of the process, helping you learn which foods work for you and which may not.
If you're working with a doctor, dietitian or other healthcare professional, follow their guidance for your individual needs.
2. Start with the foods you already eat
Before reinventing your entire kitchen, look at what's already working.
Chicken and roasted vegetables? Great. Keep them.
Fruit and coconut yogurt? Still breakfast.
Sweet potatoes with dinner? They're invited.
It can be easier to build meals around familiar foods that fit the protocol than to start by focusing on everything you're removing.
3. Find a few good swaps
This is where things start getting easier.
Instead of trying to replace your entire pantry overnight, think about the things you use most often and find AIP-friendly alternatives.
Love crackers and something crunchy? Find a snack you genuinely like.
Need a sauce to make chicken and vegetables more interesting? Stock a few AIP-friendly options.
Missing baked goods? Look for mixes made without grains, eggs, dairy or other ingredients you're currently avoiding.
A handful of dependable swaps can make everyday meals feel much more normal.
4. Read labels carefully
Even foods that seem simple can contain ingredients that aren't part of the AIP elimination phase.
Sauces, dressings, spice blends, packaged snacks and other pantry staples are especially worth a second look. Ingredients such as seed-based spices, dairy, soy, grains and certain sweeteners can turn up where you don't expect them.
The good news? Label reading gets much faster once you know what you're looking for.
And yes, this is exactly why Fully Healthy has an AIP Elimination filter. We would rather do some of that hunting for you.
5. Keep some easy food around
You will not want to cook everything from scratch every day.
This deserves repeating.
Having a few easy options on hand can make the difference between AIP feeling manageable and AIP feeling like a full-time job.
Think shelf-stable snacks, sauces and seasonings, quick breakfast options, baking mixes, pantry staples and a few treats for when you just want something good.
Convenience is allowed.
6. Remember: reintroduction is part of AIP
Elimination gets a lot of attention, but it's only one part of the process.
After the elimination phase, foods are gradually reintroduced so you can pay attention to how your body responds. Over time, the goal is to expand your diet and build a way of eating that's personalized to you, rather than unnecessarily avoiding foods that work perfectly well for your body.
That's why you'll see Fully Healthy products organized not only for AIP Elimination, but for different stages of AIP reintroduction, too.
